2019 Academic Affairs Winter Meeting

2019 Academic Affairs Winter Meeting

Leading Change: The What and the How

Higher education confronts a series of challenges: reduced funding, increased expectations, growing skepticism, alarming polarization, rapidly developing technology, and burgeoning competition. Whatever the pressure, the result is invariable the same. These challenges require institutional change, and often, radical or transformational change. Two core questions are posed by these challenges: what changes are needed, and how do we accomplish those changes?

Our conference this year will focus on those two key issues, the what and how of change. We’ll have a series of plenary and concurrent sessions that examine one or the other of these two issues, or presentations that combine the two issues, describing both a critical change that was accomplished and the processes that were used to effect that change.

We’ll also have the broad array of other issues that we typically present in our academic affairs conferences, addressing prominent academic issues in the academy: faculty issues (hiring, professional development, academic freedom, contingent faculty), academic policies and practices (free speech, tenure, etc.), instructional innovation, and a variety of other academic issues. A core strand running through this conference will be a focus on student success, engaging participants in the recent work AASCU has undertaken thru Re-Imaging the First Year and the Frontier Set.

We designed this conference to be an opportunity for learning, for sharing, for rich exchanges between colleagues, set in the relaxed atmosphere of the Amelia Island Plantation in north Florida. We hope you will join us.
